Music in Canada @ 150: Wikipedia edit-a-thon centred on the artists of Northern Lights festival!

On Friday, October 27th, from 10:00 am until 4:00 pm, Dan Scott and Desmond Maley (librarians) will run a Wikipedia & Wikidata edit-a-thon in the J.N. Desmarais Library, as part of a national series of efforts to increase the visibility of Canadian music and musicians in Wikimedia projects. We'll offer some snacks, coffee, and a light lunch to help keep participants fuelled, and will provide basic introductions on how to edit and create items in Wikidata and how to edit Wikipedia pages.

Our goal for the event is to use Northern Lights Festival Boréal (NLFB) as a focal point, populating pages like the NLFB 2015 edition to:

  • list all of the performers for each of the years;

  • enhance the pages for performers that do exist (such as for CANO, which currently lists only one member!);

  • and where those performers don't exist already in Wikidata, add entries for them.

We think we can make a lot of progress towards our goal in increasing the visibility of Canadian music and musicians in Wikimedia projects with this simple approach, and it will enhance the visibility of our local NLFB event at the same time.

If you're up for it, we would love to see you on the 27th--even just for an hour. The project and sign-up page includes the general information and a link for signing up, which would be really helpful in terms of planning catering!
