Laurentian University Libraries announce Omni, a new academic search tool
The Laurentian libraries are pleased to announce the launch of Omni, our new academic search tool, on Tuesday, December 15, 2020.
We have joined with 15 other partner universities to offer this shared search tool. First launched in December 2019 at 14 Ontario universities, Omni is a collaborative effort by members of the Ontario Council of University Libraries to adopt a common library system and share best practices and enhancements. Our goal is to make it easy for you to find and access library resources of all kinds.
What does this mean for you?
Omni will replace our current catalogue and search interfaces for scholarly articles and e-journal search with a new unified academic search tool! This will mean a better integration in your search for (e)books and scholarly articles. Some other benefits:
- As a student, staff, or faculty member at an Omni library, you can borrow resources in-person from any other Omni library with your Laurentian OneCard
- Comprehensive journal search across print and online titles
- Generous borrowing policies, including 120-day loans for most items, unlimited renewals, and the ability to borrow many more items
- Elimination of most overdue fines
Omni is based on Ex Libris’s Alma library software system and Primo VE discovery system.

About the Ontario Council of University Libraries (OCUL)
Established more than 50 years ago, OCUL is an association of Ontario's 21 university libraries, including Laurentian’s. Omni is the most recent example of OCUL institutions working together to support the academic community in Ontario. Other OCUL services which are already well established in our community are Scholars Portal and Ask a Librarian.
The consortium, which is a member of the Council of Ontario Universities, works collaboratively to improve information services in Ontario and beyond through collective purchasing and shared digital information infrastructure, collaborative planning, policy, evaluation, research, partnerships, communications and professional development.
