Special Collections are housed at the Laurentian University Archives. The seven Special Collections include:

- Vertical Files (from the Mining and the Environment database)
Publications in the Special Collections do not circulate and must be consulted in the Archives’ Angus Gilbert Reading Room.
All Special Collections publications are catalogued and are searchable in Omni. It is not necessary to make an appointment to view Special Collections publications.
The Faculty Authors Collection is a repository of published monographs by University faculty members, as well as scholarly, peer-reviewed reports by faculty members. The collection does not include books published before or after a faculty member’s appointment at the University.
All publications from the Faculty Authors Collection are catalogued and are searchable in Omni.
The Regional Collection consists of publications that deal with Northern Ontario, with a particular focus on Northeastern Ontario.
All publications from this collection are catalogued and are searchable in Omni.
The Rare Books Collection consists of special editions, rare and unique publications of recognized value, or materials that are in fragile condition. The collection also includes a number of newspapers related to Northern Ontario.
All rare books are catalogued and are searchable in Omni.
When requesting a rare book in the Archives, the full call number is required (for example: 92-3333 C44).
Reproduction of rare books may be restricted because of a publication's fragility. In such a case, the use of a camera may be permitted for reproduction.
The Reference Sources Collection consists of a variety of useful resources including:
- Finding aids for the Archives’ holdings
- Publications related to the Archives’ holdings
- Publications produced by Federal and Provincial government archives
- Publications about researching in archives.
- Laurentian University publications such as Laurentiana (yearbook) and the Gazette
All publications in the reference sources collection are catalogued and are searchable in Omni.
The Library holds a legacy print collection of Laurentian University undergraduate honours essays and theses, which are housed in the Archives.
Fourth-year essays are added to the Library’s collection when supplied by the departments or programs. As of 2013, undergraduate essays and theses have been submitted electronically and deposited online in the LUZoneUL research repository.
Laurentian University students’ undergraduate essays and theses (prior to 2013) are catalogued and are searchable in Omni.
The Graduate Theses collection is a legacy print collection of Laurentian University graduate theses published prior to July 1, 2013. As of that date, theses and Master’s essays have been submitted electronically and deposited online in the LUZoneUL research repository.
Laurentian University students’ Graduate theses and essays (prior to 2013) are catalogued and are searchable in Omni.
As part of the Mining and Environment database, vertical files include copies of articles, article summaries, and papers.
All vertical files, housed in the Archives reading room, are catalogued and are searchable in Omni.
