Why do research in the archives?

Archives focus on acquiring, preserving and giving access to primary sources.  They hold unique, unpublished material that is unavailable elsewhere.  These sources help us to understand a specific point in our history or the work of a group or individual.  Laurentian University Archives has a unique collection of material related to the University community and Northern Ontario.  Browse the collection here.

The Laurentian University Archives holds a variety of different formats of records.  We call them records regardless of the format them come in.  Here are examples of formats of records we hold here at Laurentian University Archives:

  • Textual: letters, diaries, reports, meeting minutes, etc.

  • Computer files

  • Pins

  • Posters

  • Scrapbooks

  • Photographs

  • Video and audio recordings
